Did you ever notice a grey structure or green hill set within the landscape? Chances are it's part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam of which Fort Edam is a part.
The idea behind the Defence Line of Amsterdam (an 84-mile-long defence line that was constructed between 1880 and 1914) showcases the Dutch genius for hydraulic engineering. A sophisticated system makes it possible to flood the land around the Defence Line (inundation). The ring of dikes, sluices and no less than 46 forts and batteries is situated at about 9.5-12.5 miles from the centre of Amsterdam.
The entire Defence Line is protected as a monument by both the Province of North Holland and the Dutch State. Since 1996 the 'Stelling' is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its unique universal value, along with the Great Barrier Reef, the Chinese Wall, the Beemster polder and Amsterdam's canal ring.
